Friends of the Pueblo Animal Shelter

In 2004, a small group of animal-loving local citizens came together to promote a ballot initiative to build a new modern Pueblo City-County animal shelter. Upon passage by Pueblo County voters, construction of the new shelter began in 2006. This same group of supporters plus many other caring citizens began meeting as “Friends of the Pueblo Animal Shelter,” incorporated as a 501 ©(3) nonprofit organization in 2008.

The group’s primary purpose was to raise much needed funds to support programs and enhancements at the Pueblo Animal Shelter, in particular, humane education, adoption programs, spay and neuter services, and equipment/supplies for the new on-site animal clinic.

In an effort to support the animals at the shelter, the “Friends” organized and hosted the first Whisker Ball in 2006, an event, which soon became one of the most popular fundraisers in Pueblo. Each year, hundreds of humans and their well-behaved dogs attend this unique event featuring a formal dinner, silent and live auctions, “raise the paw,” awards and tributes, speakers, demonstrations, and/or pet parades. We are grateful to our many sponsors, individual ticket purchasers, donors, and silent and live auction contributors making it possible for the Whisker Ball to raise much needed revenue for these shelter programs. Over the past 11 years, the Whisker Ball has attracted thousands of guests from Pueblo and across the state as well as raised more than $900,000 to benefit the animals at the Pueblo shelter.

Most importantly, the Friends are providing support for much needed programs and equipment, not funded by government contracts, that will save or enhance animals’ lives and enable lost and abandoned pets to be reunited with their owners or adopted into new loving homes.

Today, Friends are looking for new volunteers to help plan and host the annual Whisker Ball. Some of the committees on which volunteers may serve are event reservations, decorations, advertising, silent auction, invitations and mailings. If interested in volunteering, please contact us at
